Picky eating phases can make dinner feel personal — like every meal is a test you’re failing.

This is the pasta I come back to when everyone’s tired, no one wants surprises and I need dinner to just work.

It’s simple pasta with red sauce, served in a way that keeps trust intact while still leaving room for choice. No negotiations. No pressure. Just a familiar base and optional add-ins that kids can explore at their own pace.

Why This Works: A Kid Friendly Pasta Recipe

  • Starts with a food most kids already trust
  • Keeps flavors predictable and comforting

  • Allows exposure without forcing it

  • Separates foods so kids can choose what (and if) they add

  • Turns dinner into a low-stress win for everyone

When kids feel safe at the table, they’re far more likely to stay open over time.

Simple Pasta with Red Sauce (Plus Optional Add-Ins)

Cook time

10-15 min

Ingredients (Serves 4)

Base

  • 12 oz pasta (penne, rotini or spaghetti all work well)

  • 1–1½ cups simple marinara or red sauce

  • Olive oil or butter, to taste

Optional Add-Ins (Served Separately)

  • Steamed or roasted veggies (broccoli, zucchini, peas or carrots)

  • Protein on the side (chicken, meatballs, beans or tofu)

  • Grated or shredded cheese (parmesan or mozzarella)

How to Make It

  1. Cook pasta according to package directions.

  2. Warm red sauce gently in a separate pan.

  3. Toss pasta with a small amount of sauce plus olive oil or butter so it’s lightly coated, not drenched.

  4. Serve pasta as the main dish with add-ins placed separately.

  5. Let kids decide what — if anything — they add to their pasta.

That choice matters more than the food itself.

How I Serve It with Ahimsa

This is where the Balanced Bites Plate shines.

I place the pasta with red sauce in the main compartment and use the divided sections for veggies, protein and cheese. Nothing touches unless my child wants it to. That visual separation lowers resistance and gives kids real control over their meal.

Some nights, they eat only pasta.
Some nights, they sprinkle cheese.
Some nights, they surprise me.

All of those outcomes are normal — and successful.

A Pediatrician’s Take

Picky eating isn’t a problem to solve in one meal. It’s a phase to move through slowly, with trust leading the way.

Meals like this work because they send a simple message:
You’re safe here. You don’t have to eat anything you’re not ready for.

And when kids feel safe, curiosity tends to follow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I use stainless steel instead of plastic? Is stainless steel better for health?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report in July 2018 suggesting ways that families can limit exposure to certain chemicals at mealtime, including “the use of alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, when possible.” The report explained that “…some additives are put directly in foods, while “indirect” additives may include chemicals from plastic, glues, dyes, paper, cardboard”. Further, “Children are more sensitive to chemical exposures because they eat and drink more, relative to body weight, than adults do, and are still growing and developing.” While stainless steel items meet the recommendation to avoid plastic products in children, Ahimsa® products have the obvious advantage of not breaking like glass.

Is stainless steel better for the environment than plastic?

According to the Steel Recycling Institute, steel can be recycled over and over and over again without losing its integrity and requires less energy to recycle than to make anew. Most plastic unfortunately ends up in landfills and it is estimated to take 700 years to decompose. Our special coloring process that allows Ahimsa® products to be fully metal is environmentally friendly, so it does not produce toxic run-off into the ecosystem.

Will Ahimsa products break or peel?

No. Our steel is durable, so it won’t break or shatter with everyday use, like glass. And it won’t peel, like other colored stainless steel products you’ve seen. We use a special process that allows the colors to naturally occur in the metal.

Which Ahimsa products are best for my little one(s)?

Our products are meant to last, you can use Ahimsa at ages 1, 8 and 18! We thoughtfully design our products to be safe for little ones and our planet while reducing consumption. Once your child outgrows the Starting Solids Set  and can use regular cups and utensils, the training cup is the perfect size rinse cup in the bathroom, the infant spoon doubles as a tea stirrer and the bowl is great for snacks or as an additional compartment to our modular divided plate. Our plates are great for any age as they encourage choosing a variety of healthy foods at each meal and help visualize portion sizes easily. It’s the lasting beauty of stainless steel - grows with your child and reduces waste.
