Why Non-Toxic Plates for Toddlers Are a Must for Health-Conscious Families

My heart skipped a beat. As a pediatrician, I’ve spent countless hours poring over research, and I’ve always felt confident in my ability to make informed choices about my children’s health. Yet, there I was, staring blankly at the brightly colored plastic dishware I’d just purchased for my toddler, a growing unease settling in my stomach.

I’d diligently checked for the “BPA-free” label, but a nagging question lingered. What about all the other potential toxins lurking in those cheerful plates and bowls? My research led me to studies and articles revealing a disturbing reality about the harmful chemicals often present in plastic dishware.

It turns out that BPA is just the tip of the iceberg. Phthalates, melamine, and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals can leach into food, especially when heated. These chemicals have been linked to various health issues in children, including developmental delays, hormonal imbalances, and even an increased risk of certain cancers. One study found a correlation between exposure to phthalates in plastic dishware and behavioral problems in young children.

My determination to find a safer alternative for my family grew with each new piece of information I uncovered. It was my mother who really opened my eyes. Growing up in India, stainless steel was the norm, and she knew its benefits firsthand. As a busy medical professional, I’ll admit, I’d fallen into the trap of convenience, thoughtlessly buying plastic plates for my kids without a second thought.

But something just didn’t feel right. The lingering smell in their cups and the stubborn tomato sauce stains on their plates were constant reminders that maybe there was a better way. Turns out, my mom's intuition was spot on. In 2018, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) officially agreed that stainless steel and glass are the safest materials for children’s dinnerware. That’s when I decided to take action and work toward non toxic plates, dishes, bowls, cups and more.

I wanted to create something that combined the safety and durability of stainless steel with a touch of modern fun. And so, Ahimsa was born—the world’s first colorful stainless steel dishware designed specifically for kids. Ahimsa is more than just a brand to me; it’s a labor of love. It’s a way to provide families with safe, healthy, and sustainable options for their little ones, and it’s a tribute to my heritage and the values I hold dear.

Benefits of Stainless Steel for Toddler Dishware

Stainless steel is a dream for health-conscious families. Unlike plastic, it doesn’t leach harmful chemicals like BPA and phthalates into food. These chemicals can mess with hormones and have been linked to developmental issues in kids. It’s scary stuff, but stainless steel offers a safe alternative that lets your little ones enjoy their meals without those worries.

Durability is another major win. Toddlers are tough on dishes – they drop them, throw them, and use them as drums. Stainless steel can take a beating and still look brand new. No more cracks, chips, or worries about replacing broken dishes every few weeks. It’s an investment that will last for years, even with the roughest of toddlers.

And the benefits don’t stop there. Stainless steel is also incredibly eco-friendly. Unlike plastic, which ends up in landfills and pollutes our oceans, stainless steel is recyclable and can be used for a lifetime. Choosing stainless steel for your toddler’s dishware is a small but significant step towards reducing your family’s environmental impact.

In a world where we’re becoming increasingly aware of the impact our choices have on our health and the planet, stainless steel offers a simple yet powerful solution. It’s a safe, durable, and sustainable option that’s perfect for toddlers and gives parents peace of mind.

Choosing the Right Stainless Steel Dishware for Your Toddler

Let’s talk about finding the perfect stainless steel dishware for your little ones. Consider size and shape first. Look for plates and bowls that are appropriately sized for small hands and mouths. We don’t want anything too big or too heavy, which can make it difficult for toddlers to manage. Rounded edges are a good idea to prevent accidental pokes and prods.

Design matters too. Bright colors and fun patterns can make mealtime more appealing to picky eaters. Some stainless steel dishes even come with cute animal designs or cartoon characters. Think about what your toddler loves and choose designs that will excite them about using their new dishes.

Easy cleaning is a must. Look for dishwasher-safe options to make your life easier. Smooth surfaces without any nooks and crannies are also helpful for preventing food from getting stuck. We all know how messy toddlers can be, so the easier it is to clean up, the better.

Mealtime Essentials

Making Mealtimes Fun and Engaging with Stainless Steel

Stainless steel dishes are a great foundation, but creating a positive mealtime environment for your toddler goes beyond just safe dishware. Try involving your toddler in meal preparation. Even small tasks like washing vegetables or stirring ingredients can make them feel like they’re part of the process. It’s a chance to teach them about healthy foods and maybe even spark an interest in cooking.

Think about the atmosphere at the table, too. Family meals are a chance to connect and enjoy each other’s company. Put away the phones, turn off the TV, and focus on sharing a meal together. Encourage conversation and make mealtime a happy experience for everyone.

There was a time when one of my kids was a picky eater. We tried everything to get them to try new foods, but nothing seemed to work. Then, one day, we involved them in making their own pizza. They helped roll out the dough, spread the sauce, and sprinkle the cheese. The result? They devoured that pizza with gusto. It was a lightbulb moment for me. Involving them in the process transformed their attitude towards food.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I use stainless steel instead of plastic? Is stainless steel better for health?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report in July 2018 suggesting ways that families can limit exposure to certain chemicals at mealtime, including “the use of alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, when possible.” The report explained that “…some additives are put directly in foods, while “indirect” additives may include chemicals from plastic, glues, dyes, paper, cardboard”. Further, “Children are more sensitive to chemical exposures because they eat and drink more, relative to body weight, than adults do, and are still growing and developing.” While stainless steel items meet the recommendation to avoid plastic products in children, Ahimsa® products have the obvious advantage of not breaking like glass.

Is stainless steel better for the environment than plastic?

According to the Steel Recycling Institute, steel can be recycled over and over and over again without losing its integrity and requires less energy to recycle than to make anew. Most plastic unfortunately ends up in landfills and it is estimated to take 700 years to decompose. Our special coloring process that allows Ahimsa® products to be fully metal is environmentally friendly, so it does not produce toxic run-off into the ecosystem.

Will Ahimsa products break or peel?

No. Our steel is durable, so it won’t break or shatter with everyday use, like glass. And it won’t peel, like other colored stainless steel products you’ve seen. We use a special process that allows the colors to naturally occur in the metal.

Which Ahimsa products are best for my little one(s)?

Our products are meant to last, you can use Ahimsa at ages 1, 8 and 18! We thoughtfully design our products to be safe for little ones and our planet while reducing consumption. Once your child outgrows the Starting Solids Set  and can use regular cups and utensils, the training cup is the perfect size rinse cup in the bathroom, the infant spoon doubles as a tea stirrer and the bowl is great for snacks or as an additional compartment to our modular divided plate. Our plates are great for any age as they encourage choosing a variety of healthy foods at each meal and help visualize portion sizes easily. It’s the lasting beauty of stainless steel - grows with your child and reduces waste.
