The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report in July 2018 suggesting ways that families can limit exposure to certain chemicals at mealtime, including “the use of alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, when possible.” The report explained that “…some additives are put directly in foods, while “indirect” additives may include chemicals from plastic, glues, dyes, paper, cardboard”. Further, “Children are more sensitive to chemical exposures because they eat and drink more, relative to body weight, than adults do, and are still growing and developing.” While stainless steel items meet the recommendation to avoid plastic products in children, Ahimsa® products have the obvious advantage of not breaking like glass.

Ahimsa cups are not only inert stainless steel and therefore, nontoxic and do not leach chemicals – but they are also the perfect size for small hands. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advises that sippy cups should not be used for extended periods of time due to tooth decay. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association discourages sippy cups because they can interfere with a child’s ability to develop a mature swallowing pattern. No. Our steel is durable, so it won’t break or shatter with everyday use, like glass. And it won’t peel, like other colored stainless steel products you’ve seen. We use a special process that allows the colors to naturally occur in the metal.

According to the Steel Recycling Institute, steel can be recycled over and over and over again without losing its integrity and requires less energy to recycle than to make anew. Most plastic unfortunately ends up in landfills and it is estimated to take 700 years to decompose. Our special coloring process that allows Ahimsa® products to be fully metal is environmentally friendly, so it does not produce toxic run-off into the ecosystem.
This is my second time ordering a handful of stainless steel items from Ahimsa. All of their products are beautiful, hold up to toddler foul play and still look great YEARS later! I recently ordered larger items for my older two; rainbow cups, bowls, and circle containers and they are so fun! I’ll admit, I’ve ordered some stainless steel items from Amazon and they are trash compared to Ahimsa. Their quality is like no other and that’s why I came back, and that’s why I’ll come back again. We’re loving the larger cups and bowls for my 5 and 7 year old and my 2.5 year old twins are growing into the smaller set nicely. We purchased these to replace old stainless cups that had a smaller base and the kids knocked over…all the time. These are solid and sturdy, and still for small hands. We have had almost no spills since purchasing them! Extra points for being dishwasher safe. Would recommend, it was a great investment. We’ll be getting the bowls next! This is tableware I can feel good about.

Though they didn't seem consistent in shape and size, they are great. Stainless steel is always better than plastic, ceramic or paper.
