The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report in July 2018 suggesting ways that families can limit exposure to certain chemicals at mealtime, including “the use of alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, when possible.” The report explained that “…some additives are put directly in foods, while “indirect” additives may include chemicals from plastic, glues, dyes, paper, cardboard”. Further, “Children are more sensitive to chemical exposures because they eat and drink more, relative to body weight, than adults do, and are still growing and developing.” While stainless steel items meet the recommendation to avoid plastic products in children, Ahimsa® products have the obvious advantage of not breaking like glass.

Ahimsa cups are not only inert stainless steel and therefore, nontoxic and do not leach chemicals – but they are also the perfect size for small hands. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advises that sippy cups should not be used for extended periods of time due to tooth decay. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association discourages sippy cups because they can interfere with a child’s ability to develop a mature swallowing pattern. No. Our steel is durable, so it won’t break or shatter with everyday use, like glass. And it won’t peel, like other colored stainless steel products you’ve seen. We use a special process that allows the colors to naturally occur in the metal.

According to the Steel Recycling Institute, steel can be recycled over and over and over again without losing its integrity and requires less energy to recycle than to make anew. Most plastic unfortunately ends up in landfills and it is estimated to take 700 years to decompose. Our special coloring process that allows Ahimsa® products to be fully metal is environmentally friendly, so it does not produce toxic run-off into the ecosystem.

We are transitioning from plastic and loved this option. We also have glass but these are more durable for a toddler and don't have to worry about them breaking. Toddler likes the blue color too

These have easily become my favorite cups! Not only do my girls love them, but so do I! We bought these cups as we have shifted away from plastics for our kids. These cups are beautiful and the kids love them. They are easy to clean well in the dishwasher, though sadly the rainbow color is disappearing off the cups with only 2 weeks of washes which is unfortunate.

Mine kids love these and the rainbow finish is so cool in person. Just the right size for their hands and has a nice weight to them so they won’t easily tip over. Also great that they are non toxic!

We really love the glasses we ordered. They are the perfect size and arrived very quickly. The first day we used them, however, we were in the back yard and my 3 year old dropped her glass on the porch and the steel chipped right on the lip and is now a sharp edge and we are unable to use because of that! Other glasses are nice but since we purchased them for our 4 young kids to use, I don’t know how durable they are for their age.
