As a pediatrician, I always remind parents that food is medicine—but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring or complicated.

When kids get home from school, they’re hungry and looking for something fun—but as parents, we also want to give them fuel, not just filler. The problem? Most grab-and-go snacks are ultra-processed, filled with refined sugars, artificial additives, and low-quality ingredients that lead to blood sugar spikes and crashes.

About Ahimsa

Founded by a pediatrician and mom of three

Stainless steel is the only kid-friendly material recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics

We are guided by a Scientific Advisory Council comprised of environmental and medical experts, guiding us in creating the safest products, following the latest science and promoting policy to protect human health and our planet

What is Banana Sushi?

Banana sushi is simply a banana rolled in a nut butter spread and coated with crunchy toppings, then sliced into bite-sized “sushi” pieces.

It’s the perfect balance of:

  • Healthy fats (nut butter for brain health)
  • Fiber & slow-burning energy (banana for digestion & stable blood sugar)
  • Protein (nuts, seeds, or yogurt for muscle growth)
  • A little fun! (dark chocolate chips or granola for crunch)

This is the kind of snack that keeps kids full, energized, and focused—without the sugar crash.

  • 1 tbsp shredded coconut or cinnamon (optional for extra flavor)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Peel the banana and place it on a cutting board.
  2. Spread nut butter evenly around the banana using a butter knife or small spatula.
  3. Roll the banana in crushed granola, nuts, or seeds until it’s evenly coated.
  4. Sprinkle chocolate chips, coconut, or cinnamon over the top for extra flavor.

Prep hack: You can pre-slice the banana and let kids dip their own pieces for a DIY snack station!

Why This Snack is a Game-Changer for Kids’ Health

Most after-school snacks are high in processed sugar and low in nutrients—leading to energy crashes, mood swings, and hunger 30 minutes later.

What Makes Banana Sushi a Smart Choice?

✔ Balances blood sugar – Unlike processed snacks, this has fiber + protein + healthy fats to prevent crashes.

✔ Supports brain function – Healthy fats from nut butter help focus and learning.

✔ Boosts gut health – Bananas have prebiotic fiber, which feeds good bacteria in the gut.

✔ Encourages mindful eating – Fun, hands-on food helps kids slow down & enjoy eating.

This is why culinary medicine matters—choosing whole, simple foods that work with the body instead of against it.

Other 5-Minute Snack Ideas for Busy Parents

  • Yogurt Parfaits – Greek yogurt, berries, and granola for a protein boost.
  • Apple Nachos – Apple slices drizzled with nut butter and sprinkled with cinnamon.
  • Avocado Toast Bites – Whole-grain toast with mashed avocado and a sprinkle of hemp seeds.
  • Nut Butter Rice Cakes – A rice cake topped with peanut butter and banana slices.
  • Cheese & Fruit Kabobs – Cheese cubes and grapes on toothpicks for a fun snack.

Bonus Tip: All of these quick snacks can be served in Ahimsa’s colorful, stainless steel plates or  bowls , making them visually appealing, kid-friendly, and safer than plastic alternatives.

Final Thoughts: Food is an Investment in Your Child’s Health

As a pediatrician, I see firsthand how nutrition affects children’s mood, focus, and growth. Food isn’t just fuel—it’s an investment in their well-being.

The good news? Healthy eating doesn’t have to be hard. Banana Sushi takes less time than opening a processed snack, but supports your child’s energy, learning, and long-term health.

Try this: Use Ahimsa’s stainless steel snack bowls to set out different toppings and let kids make their own Banana Sushi—it turns snack time into a fun, interactive experience!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I use stainless steel instead of plastic? Is stainless steel better for health?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report in July 2018 suggesting ways that families can limit exposure to certain chemicals at mealtime, including “the use of alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, when possible.” The report explained that “…some additives are put directly in foods, while “indirect” additives may include chemicals from plastic, glues, dyes, paper, cardboard”. Further, “Children are more sensitive to chemical exposures because they eat and drink more, relative to body weight, than adults do, and are still growing and developing.” While stainless steel items meet the recommendation to avoid plastic products in children, Ahimsa® products have the obvious advantage of not breaking like glass.

Is stainless steel better for the environment than plastic?

According to the Steel Recycling Institute, steel can be recycled over and over and over again without losing its integrity and requires less energy to recycle than to make anew. Most plastic unfortunately ends up in landfills and it is estimated to take 700 years to decompose. Our special coloring process that allows Ahimsa® products to be fully metal is environmentally friendly, so it does not produce toxic run-off into the ecosystem.

Will Ahimsa products break or peel?

No. Our steel is durable, so it won’t break or shatter with everyday use, like glass. And it won’t peel, like other colored stainless steel products you’ve seen. We use a special process that allows the colors to naturally occur in the metal.

Which Ahimsa products are best for my little one(s)?

Our products are meant to last, you can use Ahimsa at ages 1, 8 and 18! We thoughtfully design our products to be safe for little ones and our planet while reducing consumption. Once your child outgrows the Starting Solids Set  and can use regular cups and utensils, the training cup is the perfect size rinse cup in the bathroom, the infant spoon doubles as a tea stirrer and the bowl is great for snacks or as an additional compartment to our modular divided plate. Our plates are great for any age as they encourage choosing a variety of healthy foods at each meal and help visualize portion sizes easily. It’s the lasting beauty of stainless steel - grows with your child and reduces waste.
