Our kitchen used to feel like a juggling act I couldn’t win. I’d open the cabinet and pull out a chipped plastic plate, stained from spaghetti sauce that never fully washed out. The bamboo set is gorgeous on day one, warped by week three. Silicone bowls stain and have a soapy taste. Glass ones last…until they break. It felt like I was constantly replacing dishes, trying to find something — anything— that could actually hold up to real family life.
As a pediatrician, I already knew what materials were safe. As a mom, I needed those materials to work. That’s why we started Ahimsa — to create stainless steel plates that could survive our lives and protect our kids at the same time.
Founded by a pediatrician and mom of three
Stainless steel is the only kid-friendly material recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics
We are guided by a Scientific Advisory Council comprised of environmental and medical experts, guiding us in creating the safest products, following the latest science and promoting policy to protect human health and our planet

In our house, plates have to earn their spot. That means they go in the dishwasher without warping, survive being dropped off the high chair, and never bring harmful chemicals to the table. Dishwasher-safe, break-proof, non-toxic — are the baseline.
The best plates don’t crack under pressure (literally). They make it through the baby years, toddler tantrums, and the picky-eater stage where dinner becomes a sorting game. They even hold up to “experiments” involving peas and ketchup.
Reusable sounds great on paper, but not all reusable plates are safe. Some still contain BPA, phthalates, or coatings that wear off over time. We don’t accept “less toxic” as good enough. Our kids’ plates should contain zero toxins, full stop. That’s what makes something truly safe. And if we’re going to use these plates day in and day out, they should last long enough to be passed down, not thrown out.
I kept coming back to what I knew as a doctor. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends stainless steel as a safe material for children’s mealtime and it’s easy to see why. It doesn’t contain BPA. No phthalates. No PVC, melamine, or microplastics either. That peace of mind matters more than anything.
Glass always felt like a gamble. One slip off the table and shards are everywhere. Bamboo and silicone seemed better, until I noticed peeling edges and fading finishes. Some even had binders or resins that raised more questions than answers.
Stainless steel, on the other hand, held its ground. It didn’t crack, chip, or stain. I could run it through the dishwasher and it still looked brand new. It gave us exactly what we needed — a durable, worry-free way to feed our kids without having to think twice.
Stainless steel sounds good — until you find out how many versions of it are floating around out there. We didn’t want to take chances, so we chose food-safe stainless steel. This is the same quality used in hospitals and surgical tools, where safety isn’t optional.
We use 304-grade stainless steel. It’s strong, food-safe, and built to last. We know exactly where our raw material comes from and what goes into it. No mystery metals. No cheap fillers. No coatings that flake or chip after a few dishwasher cycles.
That matters because kids don’t go easy on dishes. They gnaw on edges, toss them across the room, and put them through more wear and tear than any lab test could dream up. We made sure our plates could handle all of it — and stay safe the whole way through.
Our kids wanted color. We weren’t about to give them paint.
Instead of using dyes, lacquers, or spray-on coatings, we use a process called Physical Vapor Deposition — or PVD. It sounds fancy because it is. It’s the same method used in medical implants, where safety isn’t up for debate. The color comes from titanium nitride, a stable metal compound that’s non-toxic, biocompatible, and built to last.
The titanium vapor bonds with the steel to form a colorful outer shell that won’t peel or flake. Nothing is sprayed on. Nothing chips off in the dishwasher. The core stays 100% stainless steel, and the color becomes part of the plate itself.
We picked this method because it protects our kids while giving them something they love — shiny, rainbow dishes they reach for every single day.
Kids eat better when meals feel like their own. Bright colors, familiar shapes, and food that’s easy to see and reach — all of that makes a difference.
Ahimsa plates are divided to help kids see what’s on their plate and try new foods without feeling overwhelmed. That simple design encourages age-appropriate portions, more variety, and fewer power struggles.
We follow Montessori principles in our home, and these plates help reinforce independence. Kids learn to serve themselves, recognize full and empty, and build routines around mealtime. The more they feel in control, the more they actually enjoy eating.
Children’s bodies are still growing. Their organs, hormones, and immune systems are developing every single day. What touches their food matters.
Plates should never leach harmful chemicals, flake into meals, or crack under pressure. I saw too many dishes do exactly that. That’s why we turned to stainless steel — strong, stable, and free from toxins that don’t belong anywhere near a child’s plate.
I wanted dishware that protected my kids at every stage. Something that supported their health instead of putting it at risk. That’s where Ahimsa started. That’s still why we do what we do.
We don’t guess when it comes to safety — we test.
Ahimsa dishes are MADE SAFE® certified, which means every product has been screened for over 15,000 known toxicants across human & environmental health.
We’re the only stainless steel dishware company in the world with this certification. That’s not a brag. That’s the standard we believe every family deserves.
Our Safety Promise is the entire reason we started Ahimsa in the first place.
We don’t believe in throwaway dishes. Every Ahimsa plate comes with a lifetime warranty because it’s made to go the distance.
Stainless steel holds up — and when it’s finally done (years from now), it’s 100% recyclable. In fact, it’s the most recycled material in the world. That makes it better for your home and the planet. Durable isn’t a feature. It’s the whole point.
We started Ahimsa because too many families were stuck choosing between safety, durability, and design. We didn’t want you to have to choose at all.
Our stainless steel dishes are made from food-grade stainless steel, designed by a pediatrician who knows what matters at the table — and tested daily by real kids who definitely don’t go easy on them.
They’re safe, sturdy, and colorful enough to make even broccoli look fun. Every bite should feel safe. Every meal should feel simple. That’s what families deserve.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report in July 2018 suggesting ways that families can limit exposure to certain chemicals at mealtime, including “the use of alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, when possible.” The report explained that “…some additives are put directly in foods, while “indirect” additives may include chemicals from plastic, glues, dyes, paper, cardboard”. Further, “Children are more sensitive to chemical exposures because they eat and drink more, relative to body weight, than adults do, and are still growing and developing.” While stainless steel items meet the recommendation to avoid plastic products in children, Ahimsa® products have the obvious advantage of not breaking like glass.
According to the Steel Recycling Institute, steel can be recycled over and over and over again without losing its integrity and requires less energy to recycle than to make anew. Most plastic unfortunately ends up in landfills and it is estimated to take 700 years to decompose. Our special coloring process that allows Ahimsa® products to be fully metal is environmentally friendly, so it does not produce toxic run-off into the ecosystem.
No. Our steel is durable, so it won’t break or shatter with everyday use, like glass. And it won’t peel, like other colored stainless steel products you’ve seen. We use a special process that allows the colors to naturally occur in the metal.
Our products are meant to last, you can use Ahimsa at ages 1, 8 and 18! We thoughtfully design our products to be safe for little ones and our planet while reducing consumption. Once your child outgrows the Starting Solids Set and can use regular cups and utensils, the training cup is the perfect size rinse cup in the bathroom, the infant spoon doubles as a tea stirrer and the bowl is great for snacks or as an additional compartment to our modular divided plate. Our plates are great for any age as they encourage choosing a variety of healthy foods at each meal and help visualize portion sizes easily. It’s the lasting beauty of stainless steel - grows with your child and reduces waste.
