If you've ever hidden pureed cauliflower in your kid's mac and cheese or disguised spinach as a superhero smoothie, please know - you're not alone. As a pediatrician, I'm often asked by parents, "How do I get my child to eat vegetables?" And as a mom of three, I've definitely been there.

But let me assure you, mealtimes don't have to be a battleground. It's totally possible to cultivate a love for nutritious foods in your little ones while keeping your sanity intact. And that's why I'm here – to share my experience as a pediatrician and a fellow parent, and to offer some practical tips for creating a happy, healthy mealtime routine.

Why Food Is Fuel for Growing Bodies

In the early years, our children experience a growth spurt that would make even the fastest-growing bamboo jealous. During this crazy time, their brains and bodies are developing at warp speed, building the foundation for their future health and happiness. This probably doesn’t come as a surprise, but the foods they eat play a major part in this process.

A balanced diet, packed with various nutrients, gives kids the power to:

  • Build Strong Bones and Muscles: Calcium is the construction crew for bones, and protein is the bricks that build muscles.
  • Power Up Their Brains: Iron and omega-3 fatty acids are fuel for brain development, helping kids focus, learn, and remember.
  • Fight Off Nasty Bugs: Vitamins and minerals are the body's defense system, fighting off infections and keeping kids healthy and active.
  • Maintain a Healthy Weight: A balanced diet helps kids develop a healthy relationship with food and avoid weight problems down the road.

The choices we make about what our kids eat now create a ripple effect that influences their lifelong health and eating habits. When we start them off with a balanced diet, we're nourishing their bodies today and empowering them to make healthy choices for years to come.

Mealtime Essentials

Let's Build a Rainbow on Those Plates!

Imagine your child's plate as a blank canvas, ready to be filled with vibrant colors and flavors. Each food group represents a different color:

  • Fruits and Vegetables: These old reliable players bring a rainbow of vitamins, minerals, and fiber to the table. Think juicy berries, crunchy carrots, sweet potatoes, leafy greens, and anything else that catches your child's eye (and taste buds!).
  • Grains: Whole grains are the foundation of a healthy diet, providing energy, fiber, and B vitamins. Look for whole-wheat bread, brown rice, quinoa, oatmeal, and whole-grain cereals.
  • Protein Foods: Protein is essential for building and repairing tissues. Offer a variety of lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, lentils, eggs, nuts, and seeds.
  • Dairy or Dairy Alternatives: Dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese are excellent sources of calcium and vitamin D, crucial for strong bones and teeth. For those with dietary restrictions, there are plenty of plant-based alternatives like fortified soy milk, almond milk, and cashew milk.

Remember, moderation is key. Your child's hand is a good guide for portion sizes. A fistful of carbohydrates (grains, starchy vegetables), a palm-sized serving of protein, and a thumb-sized portion of healthy fats (avocado, nuts, seeds) are good starting points. Fill the rest of the plate with colorful fruits and vegetables.

Setting the Table for Happy Mealtimes

Who wants a side of stress with their dinner? Not me, and certainly not our kids. A positive and relaxed mealtime atmosphere can do wonders for encouraging healthy eating habits. A calm and happy vibe at the table is a secret ingredient.

Here are some tried-and-true tips for making mealtime a joyful experience:

  • Get Kids Involved: Transform meal prep into a fun family activity! Let your child choose a vegetable at the grocery store, help set the table with their favorite plates, or even arrange the food on their plate like a culinary artist.
  • Speaking of favorite plates, the Ahimsa Mindful Mealtime set is sure to become your kid’s favorite way to eat the balanced, delicious meals you make. It’s colorful, durable, and it’s got everything a kid needs.
  • Stick to a Schedule: Kids thrive on routine, and mealtimes are no exception. Aim for regular meal and snack times to help regulate their appetite and energy levels.
  • Ditch the Screens: Turn off the TV, put away the tablets, and create a space where everyone can focus on each other and the food they're sharing.
  • Spark Conversation: Mealtime is the perfect opportunity to connect with your child. Ask about their day, tell stories, share jokes, and make mealtime a time for laughter and bonding.
  • Focus on the Social Aspect: Remember, mealtime is more than just about food. It's about coming together as a family, sharing experiences, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

When Mealtime Gets Messy: Common Challenges

Picky eating, food refusal, and epic mealtime meltdowns...if these sound familiar, take a deep breath. You are not alone. These challenges are par for the course for parents.

The good news is that there are effective strategies to make mealtimes smoother and more enjoyable for everyone:

  • Picky Eating: Remember, kids' tastes are always evolving. Keep offering a variety of healthy foods, and don't give up if they refuse something at first. Sometimes, it takes multiple tries for a child to accept a new food, with the AAP stating it can take between 15-20 exposures.
  • Food Refusal: If your child refuses a meal, try not to make a big deal out of it. Simply remove the food without comment and offer it again at another meal. Avoid power struggles or forcing your child to eat.
  • Mealtime Battles: Mealtime should be a time for connection, not conflict. Keep the atmosphere relaxed and positive. Avoid using food as a reward or punishment.

Here's where Ahimsa’s full range of stainless steel dinnerware can help. Our vibrant colors and playful designs can make mealtime more appealing for kids, encouraging them to explore new foods. And because it's virtually indestructible, you won't have to worry about broken plates or chipped bowls.

Conclusion

People ask me all the time how and why my kids are such adventurous eaters. It’s because I introduce them to all kinds of foods. I make it fun and they simply don't know any different. Remember, creating a positive relationship with food takes time and patience. By focusing on balanced meals, joyful mealtimes, and the occasional sneaky veggie, you'll be setting your child up for a lifetime of healthy eating habits. So, breathe deep, embrace the mess, and enjoy the journey of raising happy, healthy eaters!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I use stainless steel instead of plastic? Is stainless steel better for health?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report in July 2018 suggesting ways that families can limit exposure to certain chemicals at mealtime, including “the use of alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, when possible.” The report explained that “…some additives are put directly in foods, while “indirect” additives may include chemicals from plastic, glues, dyes, paper, cardboard”. Further, “Children are more sensitive to chemical exposures because they eat and drink more, relative to body weight, than adults do, and are still growing and developing.” While stainless steel items meet the recommendation to avoid plastic products in children, Ahimsa® products have the obvious advantage of not breaking like glass.

Is stainless steel better for the environment than plastic?

According to the Steel Recycling Institute, steel can be recycled over and over and over again without losing its integrity and requires less energy to recycle than to make anew. Most plastic unfortunately ends up in landfills and it is estimated to take 700 years to decompose. Our special coloring process that allows Ahimsa® products to be fully metal is environmentally friendly, so it does not produce toxic run-off into the ecosystem.

Will Ahimsa products break or peel?

No. Our steel is durable, so it won’t break or shatter with everyday use, like glass. And it won’t peel, like other colored stainless steel products you’ve seen. We use a special process that allows the colors to naturally occur in the metal.

Which Ahimsa products are best for my little one(s)?

Our products are meant to last, you can use Ahimsa at ages 1, 8 and 18! We thoughtfully design our products to be safe for little ones and our planet while reducing consumption. Once your child outgrows the Starting Solids Set  and can use regular cups and utensils, the training cup is the perfect size rinse cup in the bathroom, the infant spoon doubles as a tea stirrer and the bowl is great for snacks or as an additional compartment to our modular divided plate. Our plates are great for any age as they encourage choosing a variety of healthy foods at each meal and help visualize portion sizes easily. It’s the lasting beauty of stainless steel - grows with your child and reduces waste.
