Earth Day: Why the Switch to Stainless Steel Makes an Impact

Every Earth Day, my mind goes straight back to a sunny afternoon in our backyard, all of us crowded around a tiny sapling. My kids took turns digging the hole, their hands and faces streaked with dirt, giggling every time a worm wriggled free. We probably spent more time laughing and getting filthy than actually planting that tree...but that’s the part I remember most.

Earth Day reminds me that small things grow. Tiny choices, made over and over, add up to something real. That tree, those messy hands, even the conversations about why the Earth needs our help—it all mattered.

The same goes for the things we use every single day. Every snack we pack, every dinner plate we set down in front of our kids, every cup we fill...they’re all choices too. And they can make a bigger difference than we think.

The Everyday Problem With Plastic

It’s easy to see why so many kids’ dishes are made of plastic. They’re cheap, they’re colorful, and they don’t shatter when they hit the floor, which, let's be honest, happens a lot. For a while, I bought them too. Bright plates with cartoon characters, matching cups with twisty straws...all of it.

Over time, I started noticing the cracks, the peeling edges, the way some plates got sticky no matter how many times I washed them. That’s when I learned about microplastics. Tiny bits of plastic break off and end up in our food, our water, even our bodies. Then there’s the chemicals. Some plastics contain substances like BPA that can mess with hormones and affect kids' development. Companies love to slap a “BPA-free” label on their products, but that doesn’t always mean the plastic is safe. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences , other harmful chemicals can still sneak in.

Even after I switched to “BPA-free” plates, I still found myself worrying. I didn’t want chemicals near my kids’ food at all. It felt like trading one kind of risk for another. That’s when I started looking for a better answer.

Why Stainless Steel Matters This Earth Day

Why Stainless Steel Just Works

Some things just need to survive real life—spaghetti sauce battles, dishwasher marathons, the occasional ride in a sticky backpack. Stainless steel handles it all. It doesn’t crack, peel, or warp. It doesn’t hold onto yesterday’s lunch smell either. Stainless steel just keeps going, no matter what kids throw at it...or throw it at.

One of my favorite things about stainless steel is that it’s free of chemicals. No BPA. No phthalates. No mystery coatings that start to flake after a few months. Just strong, safe material that keeps food tasting the way it should.

It’s good for the planet too. Stainless steel is endlessly recyclable , which means it doesn’t end up clogging landfills like plastic does. Every plate, cup, or bowl made from stainless steel can be melted down and reborn as something useful again and again.

Back when my kids were little, I tried everything I could find on the market. Nothing felt good enough. I wanted dishes that were truly safe, that could last through childhood and still be standing when their own kids came along. That’s why we started Ahimsa. We knew families deserve something better.

Montessori always reminds me that small, real things matter. Kids deserve to eat from dishes made from real materials—solid, beautiful, durable. Giving them something sturdy and lasting teaches them to care for their things and the world around them, one meal at a time.

How Small Changes Build Big Habits

Earth Day reminds me that change doesn’t always look big at first. It looks like tiny choices stacking up over time until they matter in ways we can’t always see.

Every time a child grabs a stainless steel plate instead of a plastic one, they’re practicing responsibility without anyone having to spell it out. They learn that what they use, how they treat it, and where it ends up all have meaning. No long speeches required.

Montessori thinking says the best lessons come from doing, not from talking. Real-world action sticks with kids more than any reminder ever could. When we give them real, durable materials to use every day, we’re showing them how to live thoughtfully. One meal, one choice, one little habit at a time.

Why Kids Love Stainless Steel Too

Kids notice things we sometimes miss. The cool feeling of a plate when they pick it up. The way the light bounces off the shiny surface. The soft clink of a cup against the table. Stainless steel wakes up their senses in a way plastic never can.

At Ahimsa, we add a little extra magic by using PVD technology to create bright, colorful finishes—safe, durable rainbows right on their stainless steel plates and cups.

Montessori philosophy teaches that kids connect more deeply with real materials. A stainless steel plate feels real in their hands. It gives them a sense of pride, like they’re trusted with something important. Real dishes build real independence, one meal at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I use stainless steel instead of plastic? Is stainless steel better for health?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report in July 2018 suggesting ways that families can limit exposure to certain chemicals at mealtime, including “the use of alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, when possible.” The report explained that “…some additives are put directly in foods, while “indirect” additives may include chemicals from plastic, glues, dyes, paper, cardboard”. Further, “Children are more sensitive to chemical exposures because they eat and drink more, relative to body weight, than adults do, and are still growing and developing.” While stainless steel items meet the recommendation to avoid plastic products in children, Ahimsa® products have the obvious advantage of not breaking like glass.

Is stainless steel better for the environment than plastic?

According to the Steel Recycling Institute, steel can be recycled over and over and over again without losing its integrity and requires less energy to recycle than to make anew. Most plastic unfortunately ends up in landfills and it is estimated to take 700 years to decompose. Our special coloring process that allows Ahimsa® products to be fully metal is environmentally friendly, so it does not produce toxic run-off into the ecosystem.

Will Ahimsa products break or peel?

No. Our steel is durable, so it won’t break or shatter with everyday use, like glass. And it won’t peel, like other colored stainless steel products you’ve seen. We use a special process that allows the colors to naturally occur in the metal.

Which Ahimsa products are best for my little one(s)?

Our products are meant to last, you can use Ahimsa at ages 1, 8 and 18! We thoughtfully design our products to be safe for little ones and our planet while reducing consumption. Once your child outgrows the Starting Solids Set  and can use regular cups and utensils, the training cup is the perfect size rinse cup in the bathroom, the infant spoon doubles as a tea stirrer and the bowl is great for snacks or as an additional compartment to our modular divided plate. Our plates are great for any age as they encourage choosing a variety of healthy foods at each meal and help visualize portion sizes easily. It’s the lasting beauty of stainless steel - grows with your child and reduces waste.
