Why Reduce Food Waste? The Earth Month Connection

Food waste is a major environmental issue, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and unnecessary resource use. In the U.S. alone, 30-40% of the food supply goes to waste each year! By getting creative with kitchen scraps, we can reduce waste, save money, and make something delicious.

This Earth Month, let’s celebrate sustainability by turning fruit scraps into a homemade jam for a waste-free, kid-friendly picnic.

Fun Fact: Making jam from fruit scraps isn’t just good for the planet—it also locks in nutrients and flavors, giving you a delicious, naturally sweet spread with no artificial preservatives.

The Best Fruit Scraps for Homemade Jam

Many fruit parts that we usually toss are packed with flavor and natural pectin (which helps thicken jam). Here are the best scraps to save:

  • Strawberry tops – Full of flavor and natural sweetness
  • Apple peels and cores – Great source of natural pectin
  • Citrus peels (lemon, orange, lime) – Adds a zesty kick
  • Berry pulp – Leftover from juicing? Perfect for jam!
  • Overripe fruit – Bananas, peaches, or plums past their prime

Pro Tip: Store scraps in a freezer bag until you have enough to make a batch of jam.

This simple no-waste jam recipe uses natural ingredients and requires no pectin—just a little patience!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fruit scraps (apple peels, strawberry tops, citrus zest, etc.)
  • 1/2 cup honey or maple syrup (for natural sweetness)
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice (helps preserve freshness)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon or vanilla extract (optional, for extra flavor)
  • 1/2 cup water

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prep the fruit scraps: Rinse all fruit scraps to remove any dirt or pesticide residue. If using apple cores, remove the seeds.
  2. Simmer the mixture: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine fruit scraps, water, and lemon juice. Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes until the fruit softens.
  3. Mash or blend: Use a fork to mash the fruit or an immersion blender for a smoother consistency.
  4. Sweeten naturally: Add honey or maple syrup to taste. Stir in cinnamon or vanilla extract for added flavor.
  5. Thicken the jam: Let the mixture cook for another 5 minutes until it thickens. If needed, add a teaspoon of chia seeds to help it set.
  6. Store & enjoy! Transfer to a glass jar and refrigerate for up to two weeks.

Serving Idea: Spread this jam on whole-grain crackers, toast, or Ahimsa stainless steel plates as part of a beautiful charcuterie board!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I use stainless steel instead of plastic? Is stainless steel better for health?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report in July 2018 suggesting ways that families can limit exposure to certain chemicals at mealtime, including “the use of alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, when possible.” The report explained that “…some additives are put directly in foods, while “indirect” additives may include chemicals from plastic, glues, dyes, paper, cardboard”. Further, “Children are more sensitive to chemical exposures because they eat and drink more, relative to body weight, than adults do, and are still growing and developing.” While stainless steel items meet the recommendation to avoid plastic products in children, Ahimsa® products have the obvious advantage of not breaking like glass.

Is stainless steel better for the environment than plastic?

According to the Steel Recycling Institute, steel can be recycled over and over and over again without losing its integrity and requires less energy to recycle than to make anew. Most plastic unfortunately ends up in landfills and it is estimated to take 700 years to decompose. Our special coloring process that allows Ahimsa® products to be fully metal is environmentally friendly, so it does not produce toxic run-off into the ecosystem.

Will Ahimsa products break or peel?

No. Our steel is durable, so it won’t break or shatter with everyday use, like glass. And it won’t peel, like other colored stainless steel products you’ve seen. We use a special process that allows the colors to naturally occur in the metal.

Which Ahimsa products are best for my little one(s)?

Our products are meant to last, you can use Ahimsa at ages 1, 8 and 18! We thoughtfully design our products to be safe for little ones and our planet while reducing consumption. Once your child outgrows the Starting Solids Set  and can use regular cups and utensils, the training cup is the perfect size rinse cup in the bathroom, the infant spoon doubles as a tea stirrer and the bowl is great for snacks or as an additional compartment to our modular divided plate. Our plates are great for any age as they encourage choosing a variety of healthy foods at each meal and help visualize portion sizes easily. It’s the lasting beauty of stainless steel - grows with your child and reduces waste.
