Welcome to The Pediatrician Kitchen at Ahimsa

I’m a pediatrician and a busy mom of three. So I understand how chaotic mealtimes and morning routines can feel. But I also know, from science and real life, that what we serve our kids, and how we involve them, matters more than we think.

That’s why I created The Pediatrician Kitchen: to help families shift from convenience to intention when it comes to food. Because mealtimes (and lunchboxes!) aren’t just about feeding bellies. They’re opportunities to shape lifelong health habits.

Here, you’ll find simple, fast, affordable recipes and strategies that make healthy eating realistic, joyful, and kid-approved. Because food is medicine. Food is health. And food is a chance to teach, connect, and empower, even in a lunchbox.

And just as important as what goes into your child’s lunch is what you pack it in. That’s why we recommend using stainless steel food containers for safer, smarter lunches.

If you’ve ever Googled “healthy summer camp lunch,” you’re not alone. The good news? You don’t need gourmet prep or fancy containers to make it work. You just need a simple formula, a few staples, and a system your kids can help with.

Mealtime Essentials

Why This Works: Pediatrician-Approved Nutrition

Protein + Fiber = Sustained Energy

  • Keeps blood sugar stable during long activity-filled days
  • Helps kids feel full longer and avoid energy crashes

Hydrating Fruits & Veggies = Better Focus + Digestion

  • Many summer lunches are dry—this adds water naturally
  • Supports gut health, immunity, and body temperature regulation

“Fun” Food = Joy + Balance

  • Including a small treat or favorite snack prevents feelings of restriction
  • Teaches kids that healthy eating includes pleasure and variety

Culinary Medicine in Action: Time, Cost, Skill

Time:

  • Prep the night before in 10 minutes or less
  • Use pre-chopped or pre-portioned items for faster mornings
  • Create a “grab and go” lunch station in the fridge

Cost:

  • ~$2.50–$3 per lunch with store-brand basics
  • Far cheaper and healthier than lunchables or camp concessions

Skill:

  • Let your child help build their lunch using a visual chart
  • Great for ages 4+ to practice independence and responsibility
  • Promotes executive function and decision-making skills

Food Is a Teachable Moment

Use lunchbox time to build:

  • Independence: Let kids pack their own lunch from pre-set options
  • Nutrition awareness: Explain why we include each food group
  • Cultural exposure: Include global items like seaweed snacks, edamame, or tzatziki to build adventurous palates
  • Math skills: Have them count or sort components using the 3-2-1 formula

Keep Healthy Food… Healthy (Even On-the-Go)

You’ve packed nourishing food, but don’t let plastic undo your efforts.

Most lunch containers are made of plastic, which can leach harmful chemicals, especially in summer heat. That’s why we recommend Ahimsa’s The Square and The Circle stainless steel food containers.

These non-toxic, pediatrician-designed containers are:

  • Safe for hot and cold foods
  • Leak-resistant and dishwasher-safe
  • Easy for little hands to open and close
  • Perfectly sized for main courses (The Square) and sides or snacks (The Circle)

Because what you pack in matters—and so does what you pack it in. Whether it’s a full lunch or just sides and snacks, Ahimsa’s stainless snack containers offer peace of mind for busy families.

Final Thought: A Lunch with Lifelong Impact

A lunchbox may seem small, but it’s one of the most consistent opportunities we have to nourish, teach, and empower our kids—one bite at a time.

Healthy doesn’t mean hard. With the right system and tools, lunch-packing can be one less thing to stress over—and one more way to build lifelong healthy habits.

Stainless steel food containers do more than carry food. They protect it, preserve nutrition, and support healthier routines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I use stainless steel instead of plastic? Is stainless steel better for health?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report in July 2018 suggesting ways that families can limit exposure to certain chemicals at mealtime, including “the use of alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, when possible.” The report explained that “…some additives are put directly in foods, while “indirect” additives may include chemicals from plastic, glues, dyes, paper, cardboard”. Further, “Children are more sensitive to chemical exposures because they eat and drink more, relative to body weight, than adults do, and are still growing and developing.” While stainless steel items meet the recommendation to avoid plastic products in children, Ahimsa® products have the obvious advantage of not breaking like glass.

Is stainless steel better for the environment than plastic?

According to the Steel Recycling Institute, steel can be recycled over and over and over again without losing its integrity and requires less energy to recycle than to make anew. Most plastic unfortunately ends up in landfills and it is estimated to take 700 years to decompose. Our special coloring process that allows Ahimsa® products to be fully metal is environmentally friendly, so it does not produce toxic run-off into the ecosystem.

Will Ahimsa products break or peel?

No. Our steel is durable, so it won’t break or shatter with everyday use, like glass. And it won’t peel, like other colored stainless steel products you’ve seen. We use a special process that allows the colors to naturally occur in the metal.

Which Ahimsa products are best for my little one(s)?

Our products are meant to last, you can use Ahimsa at ages 1, 8 and 18! We thoughtfully design our products to be safe for little ones and our planet while reducing consumption. Once your child outgrows the Starting Solids Set  and can use regular cups and utensils, the training cup is the perfect size rinse cup in the bathroom, the infant spoon doubles as a tea stirrer and the bowl is great for snacks or as an additional compartment to our modular divided plate. Our plates are great for any age as they encourage choosing a variety of healthy foods at each meal and help visualize portion sizes easily. It’s the lasting beauty of stainless steel - grows with your child and reduces waste.
