We’ve all got something we’ve used so many times it’s paid for itself a hundred times over. Maybe it’s your go-to pair of jeans, your trusty coffee mug, or that reusable water bottle that’s been through soccer games, school drop-offs, and afternoon hikes. That’s cost per use in action. The idea is simple: divide the total price of something by how often you use it. The more you use it, the more value you get for your money.
When it comes to the best plates for kids, cost per use really matters. We’re talking multiple meals, snacks, and drinks every single day. A cheap plastic plate might seem like a deal at first, but when it stains, cracks, or gets replaced after a few months? Not so much.
A stainless steel plate, on the other hand, is built to last. And when it’s safe, durable, and easy to clean, you’re getting more than your money’s worth.

I get it — when you’re shopping for kids’ dishes, it’s tempting to grab the colorful plastic or bamboo set that’s easy on the wallet. But here’s the thing: those “budget-friendly” options often come with hidden costs. They warp in the dishwasher or crack when dropped faster than your toddler changes their mind about what snack they want.
Each time you replace those broken or worn-out dishes, you're spending more money and generating more waste. It adds up quickly.
Now think about a stainless steel plate. It stands up to a lot of punishment. It holds up through countless meals, spills, and washes. That means fewer replacements and more savings over time.
Choosing long-lasting materials like stainless steel isn’t about splurging—it’s about being smart. Investing once in something reliable means you’re not cutting corners—you’re stepping off the replace-and-repeat treadmill for good.
There’s a reason stainless steel is trusted for things that absolutely have to last like surgical tools, medical implants, and professional cookware. It’s incredibly strong, stable, and resistant to corrosion. When a material is safe enough for hospitals and built tough enough for commercial kitchens, it’s more than ready to handle life at your family’s dinner table.
Stainless steel plates can take just about anything you (or your kids) throw at them. They can survive being dropped from highchairs, run through the dishwasher, and endure endless toddler tantrums. They’re reliable dishes that last a long time.
Ahimsa’s stainless steel plates are designed to grow with your child and even be passed down to younger siblings — or someday, their kids. That’s how durable they are. And while we don’t like to brag, a lifetime warranty quietly says it all. Because when something is made this well, it’s not just built for childhood, it’s built for life.
Not all stainless steel is created equal and when it comes to what touches your child’s food, that difference truly matters. The quality of the raw material determines how safe, durable, and long-lasting the plate will be. Ahimsa uses premium 18/8 (also known as 304) food-grade stainless steel, the same high standard trusted in hospitals, medical tools, and professional kitchens. This specific blend contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, giving it excellent resistance to rust, corrosion, and staining, while avoiding harmful chemicals.
For children’s dishes, choosing the right material isn’t just about taste or style, it’s about protecting their growing bodies from harmful substances and ensuring that every meal is as safe as it is enjoyable. With Ahimsa’s carefully sourced, pediatrician-designed stainless steel plates, you’re choosing the gold standard in both safety and quality, made to support your child’s health today and for years to come.
The beautiful color on our stainless steel comes from a safe process called Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) that uses titanium nitride. Titanium nitride is a metal, not a paint, lacquer, or powder, and, like stainless steel, it’s non-toxic, biocompatible, and incredibly stable. It’s the same material trusted in medical implants and food-contact surfaces because it doesn’t react with the body or with food.
During the PVD process, the titanium’s color is altered through a physical reaction, and then a thin, durable layer of this metal is bonded to the stainless steel underneath. The result is our signature Ahimsa rainbow shine: colorful, strong, and completely safe. Beneath that brilliance, the core remains 100% food-grade stainless steel, carefully chosen and tested to protect children’s health with every meal.
Let’s do the math. It’s easy to see why stainless steel wins when you look at the cost per use. Based on how long each material lasts, the stainless steel plate cost averages about $0.02 per use, while silicone can cost up to $0.09 per use, plastic and melamine up to $0.06, and bamboo up to $0.05.
Now imagine this: you buy a $5 plastic plate that needs to be replaced every year. Over five years, that’s $25—often more when you factor in multiple kids or broken dishes. Compare that to a one-time purchase of a $22 stainless steel plate that lasts through daily meals for five years (and beyond). The math speaks for itself.
But the savings go beyond money. Stainless steel doesn’t leach harmful chemicals into food, doesn’t stain or warp, and is effortless to clean. Fewer replacements, fewer worries, and healthier meals for pennies per use.
Every parent wants to give their child the healthiest start possible and that extends to what they eat from, not just what they eat. Pediatricians and scientists have long warned that materials like plastic, melamine, and silicone can release harmful chemicals—especially when exposed to heat, acidic foods, or time. Those invisible risks may not show up right away, but they can quietly impact children’s growth and development over time.
That’s why the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends stainless steel as the only non-breakable, truly safe material for kids’ dinnerware. It doesn’t leach, doesn’t degrade, and stays stable through years of use.
Think about it: your child’s plate, cup, and bowl touch their food three times a day, every single day. Choosing a safe, non-toxic material is the best choice you can make. Because when it comes to your child’s health, there’s no such thing as “good enough.”
When it comes to your child’s health, trust should be earned and, if possible, verified. That’s why third-party safety certifications matter. Ahimsa’s products are MADE SAFE® certified, meaning they’ve been rigorously tested and verified to be free from more than 6,500 known harmful chemicals — including BPA, PVC, phthalates, and heavy metals.
This certification confirms that every Ahimsa product meets the highest standards of human and environmental safety. No guesswork, no hidden toxins, just peace of mind.
When you add it all up, stainless steel plates deliver unbeatable cost per use and unmatched peace of mind. They outlast every alternative, protect your child’s health, and help families save money with every meal. From fewer replacements to fewer worries, it’s the smart, sustainable choice that parents can truly feel good about.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report in July 2018 suggesting ways that families can limit exposure to certain chemicals at mealtime, including “the use of alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, when possible.” The report explained that “…some additives are put directly in foods, while “indirect” additives may include chemicals from plastic, glues, dyes, paper, cardboard”. Further, “Children are more sensitive to chemical exposures because they eat and drink more, relative to body weight, than adults do, and are still growing and developing.” While stainless steel items meet the recommendation to avoid plastic products in children, Ahimsa® products have the obvious advantage of not breaking like glass.
According to the Steel Recycling Institute, steel can be recycled over and over and over again without losing its integrity and requires less energy to recycle than to make anew. Most plastic unfortunately ends up in landfills and it is estimated to take 700 years to decompose. Our special coloring process that allows Ahimsa® products to be fully metal is environmentally friendly, so it does not produce toxic run-off into the ecosystem.
No. Our steel is durable, so it won’t break or shatter with everyday use, like glass. And it won’t peel, like other colored stainless steel products you’ve seen. We use a special process that allows the colors to naturally occur in the metal.
Our products are meant to last, you can use Ahimsa at ages 1, 8 and 18! We thoughtfully design our products to be safe for little ones and our planet while reducing consumption. Once your child outgrows the Starting Solids Set and can use regular cups and utensils, the training cup is the perfect size rinse cup in the bathroom, the infant spoon doubles as a tea stirrer and the bowl is great for snacks or as an additional compartment to our modular divided plate. Our plates are great for any age as they encourage choosing a variety of healthy foods at each meal and help visualize portion sizes easily. It’s the lasting beauty of stainless steel - grows with your child and reduces waste.
