There’s something about back-to-school season that makes everything feel a little clearer. I know I’m not the only one who sees a blank planner and feels that flicker of hope. New routines. New notebooks. A chance to press pause on the summer chaos and try again.
But around here, the shift is about more than pencils and folders – it’s also about the rhythm of our home. The way we set up our days, our snacks, our table. I’ve found that how we organize our space has a huge effect on how calmly those first few weeks go, for my kids and for me.
That’s why I’ve started thinking about school supplies in a different way. Sure, the glue sticks and crayons matter. But so do the reusable containers we pull out for snacks, the little bins that hold our pencils, and the corner of the room where focus can actually happen. The real supply list starts at home.

It doesn’t need to look like a classroom. What matters is that it’s theirs. A small table, a tray of sharpened pencils, and a quiet corner with fewer distractions — those are the things that make homework feel possible.
We’ve carved out our own nook near the kitchen. Nothing fancy. A lamp, some clear containers, and a corkboard, the kids use to pin up reminders or their favorite doodles. It’s always there, waiting. No searching for lost notebooks. No, clearing toys off the table first.
Montessori philosophy reminds us that kids thrive with structure. Giving them a defined space signals that learning is important, but also manageable. When their supplies are visible and within reach, they don’t need as much help to get started.
Let them pick their own tools. Touches like a stainless steel cup for markers or a box with their name on it build a sense of ownership. They’re more likely to settle in without a fight. And once they’re done, we swap out the books for a snack plate. It’s a simple transition, but one that tells them: work is finished, now it’s time to refuel. The routine feels good. They know what’s coming. I know where everything is. That alone feels like a win.
Most of the time, school supply shopping ends with a cart full of plastic. Bright colors, cartoon characters, flashy containers that crack by October. And under all that shine? A whole list of chemicals no parent wants near their kid’s food — BPA, PVC, phthalates, lead. Even some so-called “natural” dishes sneak in coatings or glazes that wear off after a few dishwasher cycles.
I used to think reusable meant safe by default. It doesn’t. I started Ahimsa because I couldn’t find dishes I truly trusted. I wanted something that wouldn’t just survive the school year, but actually support my children’s health. That’s why our plates and bowls are made from 304 food-grade stainless steel. No coatings. No plastic. No surprises.
The rainbow colors come from a process called Physical Vapor Deposition, or PVD for short. It uses titanium, not paint or powder, to create a permanent, non-toxic finish. It’s the same technology used in medical implants. That’s how serious we are about safety.
Our metal dishes don’t stain, don’t chip, and don’t warp. They’re easy to clean, dishwasher safe, and honestly, they look beautiful sitting on a counter stacked with apple slices and almonds. They give you all the durability of cafeteria trays without the industrial feel, just safe, practical, and actually pretty.
Right around 3:30, it hits. Backpacks hit the floor, shoes scatter in three directions, and suddenly everyone’s starving. Not just “a little hungry.” The kind of hungry that turns a quiet kitchen into a full-blown snack frenzy.
I’ve learned to stay one step ahead with a plate already set out. Sometimes it’s crackers and hummus. Sometimes it’s carrot sticks and a handful of raisins. The food matters, but the routine matters more. Snack time resets the whole house. It gives kids a moment to recharge before jumping into homework, sports, or just unwinding.
We use our stainless steel bowls and plates for this every day. The Simple Serve Bowl fits cut fruit or yogurt without a mess. The Balanced Bites Divided Plate helps with pickier eaters who like their grapes nowhere near their pretzels. Combine the two and you’ll get a Dine and Develop Feeding Set . And I don’t have to worry about what’s leaching into their food or whether the dish will survive a drop onto tile.
It’s also a great time for independence. I’ll set out the snacks and let them serve themselves. They scoop, pour, and nibble while telling me about their day. That short window between school and dinner feels calmer now. No wrappers. No waste. Just a few good bites and a better mood all around.

It’s easy to overlook the small stuff like the scissors, the snack bowls, and the water bottles. But those are the things your kids touch and use every single day. Choosing eco-friendly options doesn’t mean buying an entirely new set of supplies each year. It means choosing better from the start.
Montessori teaches us that kids learn through interaction with their environment. The tools they use shape how they think, how they care for their things, and how they feel about routines. When we fill their space with objects that last, they learn that quality matters more than quantity.
Our stainless steel plates and bowls aren’t trendy; they’re practical. They don’t break when dropped. They don’t end up in a landfill after a single school year. And they don’t add to the clutter of mystery containers hiding in kitchen drawers. Less mess. Fewer replacements. More space for things that actually work. That’s what we’re going for.
Not all stainless steel is made the same. We use 304 food-grade stainless steel, the kind trusted in the medical and food industries. It’s non-reactive, free from harmful chemicals, and built to handle heat, cold, and whatever chaos your kitchen throws at it.
The colors? That’s where things really get different. We use PVD, a process that bonds titanium to the steel without any coatings or paint. No peeling. No toxins. Nothing to worry about, even after years of washing, and the kind of quality I wanted in my own home, for my own kids.
Peace of mind shouldn’t require a magnifying glass. Every Ahimsa product is MADE SAFE® certified, meaning a third party has reviewed our materials for known toxicants and deemed them safe for human use. No BPA, no phthalates, no heavy metals. Just clean, tested, trusted materials that support your child’s health.
There’s no perfect way to start the school year. But a little calm in the chaos helps. A corner to do homework. A plate of snacks that doesn’t come with plastic wrappers or questionable chemicals. A few solid tools that hold up, year after year.
We built Ahimsa to make those moments easier. Not flashy. Not complicated. Just safe, durable, good-looking stuff that helps your family settle into a rhythm that works.
Back-to-school doesn’t have to mean back to stress. Let’s make it feel a little lighter, a little simpler, and a whole lot more thoughtful, one snack plate at a time.
Dr. Manasa Mantravadi is a board-certified pediatrician whose dedication to children’s health drove her to launch Ahimsa, the world's first colorful stainless steel dishes for kids. She was motivated by the American Academy of Pediatrics’ findings on harmful chemicals in plastic affecting children's well-being. Ahimsa has gained widespread recognition and been featured in media outlets such as Parents Magazine, the Today Show, The Oprah Magazine, and more.
Dr. Mantravadi received the esteemed “Physician Mentor of the Year” award at Indiana University School of Medicine in 2019. She was also named a Forbes Next 1000 Entrepreneur in 2021, with her inspiring story showcased on Good Morning America. She serves on the Council for Environmental Health and Climate Change and the Council for School Health at The American Academy of Pediatrics. She represents Ahimsa as a U.S. industry stakeholder on the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) for the Global Plastics Treaty, led by the United Nations Environment Program. Dr. Mantravadi leads Ahimsa's social impact program, The Conscious Cafeteria Project, to reduce carbon emissions and safeguard student health as part of a national pilot of the Clinton Global Initiative.
She is dedicated to educating and empowering people to make healthier, more environmentally friendly choices at mealtime. Her mission remains to advocate for the health of all children and the one planet we will leave behind for them through real policy change within our food system.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a report in July 2018 suggesting ways that families can limit exposure to certain chemicals at mealtime, including “the use of alternatives to plastic, such as glass or stainless steel, when possible.” The report explained that “…some additives are put directly in foods, while “indirect” additives may include chemicals from plastic, glues, dyes, paper, cardboard”. Further, “Children are more sensitive to chemical exposures because they eat and drink more, relative to body weight, than adults do, and are still growing and developing.” While stainless steel items meet the recommendation to avoid plastic products in children, Ahimsa® products have the obvious advantage of not breaking like glass.
According to the Steel Recycling Institute, steel can be recycled over and over and over again without losing its integrity and requires less energy to recycle than to make anew. Most plastic unfortunately ends up in landfills and it is estimated to take 700 years to decompose. Our special coloring process that allows Ahimsa® products to be fully metal is environmentally friendly, so it does not produce toxic run-off into the ecosystem.
No. Our steel is durable, so it won’t break or shatter with everyday use, like glass. And it won’t peel, like other colored stainless steel products you’ve seen. We use a special process that allows the colors to naturally occur in the metal.
Our products are meant to last, you can use Ahimsa at ages 1, 8 and 18! We thoughtfully design our products to be safe for little ones and our planet while reducing consumption. Once your child outgrows the Starting Solids Set and can use regular cups and utensils, the training cup is the perfect size rinse cup in the bathroom, the infant spoon doubles as a tea stirrer and the bowl is great for snacks or as an additional compartment to our modular divided plate. Our plates are great for any age as they encourage choosing a variety of healthy foods at each meal and help visualize portion sizes easily. It’s the lasting beauty of stainless steel - grows with your child and reduces waste.
